Geography is a subject of wide and popular interest, touching upon issues of regional, national and international importance. Central to this is the study of society and the environment and the relationship and interaction between the two. Subjects such as climate change, environmental degradation, planning, sustainable development and globalisation are all studied. The course covers subjects from excellent field studies in the UK and abroad, to the latest in IT, including the increasingly important methods of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The balance of human and physical Geography; the emphasis on fieldwork (day and residential); the development of employability skills, the centre piece of which is the placement year (a recommended option for all Geography students) are all features specific to Sunderland.
The University is well placed for access to a wide range of urban and rural settings for fieldwork, visits and practical training. There are two annual residential field visits - one in the UK and one to the city of Barcelona.
