The law programme offers the chance to combine intellectual challenges, interest and variety, with the opportunity to work with and for people. The key component of the law degree is the development and enhancement of transferable skills. To do this, it is possible to study very specific areas of law. If the student plans to practise in a commercial sphere, there are options such as commercial law, employment law, intellectual property law and company law. Alternatively, if the student wishes to pursue a career practising in crime and litigation, the options selected could be areas such as Evidence, Organised Crime and Terrorism and Civil and Criminal Practice.

The law department at Sunderland have obtained accreditation from the Association of Licensed Paralegals and consequently students who complete a number of option modules over the course of their LL.B Programme, will be eligible for the award of the NALP Diploma in Paralegal Studies.

The teaching and learning facilities for Law at Sunderland are excellent, with most teaching taking place in the newly-refurbished Priestman Building. The library has a wide range of texts and journals, as well as database and electronic research information. There is also 24-hour access to award-winning computing facilities.
