Media industries are youthful, exciting, dynamic and growing, with literally hundreds of different jobs and career paths to follow. The media degree prepares a student for a wide range of careers in the radio, TV and video and interactive media industries. In addition to developing valuable production skills, the student will learn a great deal about how the media work. By studying media and cultural theory, exploring how the media has developed over time and analysing film, students are expected to become much more than just a button-pusher because of the greater depth of understanding they’ll gain.
The campus-based radio station Utopia FM provides opportunities for students to broadcast across the Wearside area. Students run Utopia FM themselves with tutor support, and working with the local community, they are responsible for news-gathering, programme production and advertising. Regular student magazines and newsletters provide further opportunities for you to develop your experience and skills, and we make frequent live television webcasts over the Internet too.
Fully equipped seminar rooms and a learning resource centre are provided, there are state-of-the-art TV and radio studios and digital post-production facilities, computer suites, fully equipped journalism suites with live news feeds and a surround sound cinema.
