Photography is taught as a practice-based subject, working in documentary and art-based production. Students are expected to learn a range of technical skills, alongside contextual and theoretical knowledge so that they are able to develop and realise their own creative ideas. Photography uses a variety of learning and teaching strategies as appropriate to a practical subject, including lectures, seminars, critiques, tutorials, practical workshops, presentations and demonstrations. Much of the time students are left to their own devices to develop their own style and techniques.

The university has new and excellent photography facilities including a wide range of studios, dark rooms and equipment. Much of the photography is situated in the recently developed St Peter’s Campus which contains cutting edge facilities.
