Sunderland has hundreds of pubs and bars comprising drinking holes of all appearance, price and atmosphere. The beer prices in Sunderland are among the lowest in the country with a pint in a typical pub costing no more than £2 and even in the city centre’s late night bars less than £3 is the norm. However there are far better drink offers at certain times of the day with happy hours being frequently in place. Here drinks can be as low as £1, or even free depending on your luck with the push-button game!

The pubs in Sunderland are generally friendly to students and young people. In particularly; the Ivy House and the Royalty, situated very close to the university, are big student hangouts. Some of the best traditional pubs are situated on the south side of the Wear, just out of the town centre. The Saltgrass, Kings Arms and Ropery (which has live music) consistently win awards.

The city centre is full of bars to suit everybody, some are cheap, others fairly exclusive, but most tend to have drinks offers to attract students. Some of the most student orientated bars are those which play indie music such as the White Rooms and Pure. Varsity and Chase have constant drinks offers, while Ttonic and Paddywacks never fail to draw big crowds. A few bars including Glass Spider, Paddywacks and those in the Point complex stay open very late, with some not closing ‘til as late as Six in the morning!

The university’s bar the Bonded Warehouse is slightly out of the centre on the south side of the river. The bar on the city campus has been knocked down as part of the regeneration of that area, though a new one is expected to be built in its place within a couple of years.
